Love, Attraction, or Lust? Here's How to Actually Tell the Difference

Are you in love or just obsessed? Attracted or in lust? Here's an honest, relatable guide to understanding what you're actually feeling, and what it means for you.

Love, Attraction, or Lust? Here's How to Actually Tell the Difference

Okay, real talk. You can't stop thinking about someone. Your stomach does that thing when you see their name on your phone. You've replayed the last conversation at least four times. But here's the question that's probably keeping you up at night: is this love? Is it just attraction? Or is it something a little more... physical?

These three things feel wildly similar at the start. But they lead to very different places. And knowing which one you're in can save you a lot of confusion, and heartbreak.

Let's start with the one that gets everyone

Lust
Lust is electric. It's instant. It's that pull you feel before you even know someone's last name. It's physical, it's urgent, and it's completely intoxicating - which is exactly why it's so easy to mistake for something deeper.

The thing about lust is that it lives almost entirely in your imagination. You're not falling for who they actually are; you're falling for who you've decided they are based on how they look, how they carry themselves, how they make you feel in the first five minutes. It's real. It's human. But it fades fast when reality shows up.

Signs it might be lust: You mostly think about them physically. You don't actually know much about their life, and you don't feel urgently curious to. The feeling is most intense when you're around them and cools pretty quickly when you're not.

Attraction
Attraction is lust's smarter, more sustainable cousin. It still starts in the physical - let's be honest, most things do - but it doesn't stay there. You're drawn to the way they think, the way they talk, their laugh, their weird little quirks. You want to be around them. You find yourself curious about their world.

Attraction is that lovely middle space where things can go either way; toward something real, or it can burn out when the excitement settles. It's exciting, it's fun, and it's the gateway to everything deeper. But on its own, it's still mostly about how this person makes you feel, not who they actually are.

Signs it might be attraction: You think about them constantly but still find yourself a little unsure who they really are beneath the surface. You enjoy their company intensely but haven't seen them at their worst, and the thought of that slightly unnerves you.

Love
Love is quieter than the other two. This is the part nobody talks about enough. Real love isn't always the fireworks moment; it's the slow, steady realisation that this person has become part of how you see the world.

You know someone's flaws and you're still here. You've seen them tired, difficult, unimpressive, and ordinary - and you're not less interested. You think about their wellbeing not just how they make you feel. You want things for them, even when those things don't directly benefit you. That's love. It's generous in a way that lust and attraction simply aren't.

Signs it might be love: You feel genuinely calm around them, not just excited. You care about their happiness on days when you're not the source of it. The connection doesn't feel like it needs to be earned or maintained through performance. It just... is.

The honest truth

All three can exist at the same time, and often do. You can love someone and still feel lust. You can be attracted to someone and it can grow into love. The feelings aren't mutually exclusive. What matters is knowing which one is doing the driving.

Ask yourself this: if nothing physical was possible, would you still want this person in your life? If the answer is yes, that's probably where the love is hiding.

And if the answer surprised you? That's okay too. Knowing is always better than wondering.
